Pancake Day Essentials

What is pancake day?
March 5th 2014 is Shrove Tuesday, the day before the start of Lent in the Christian calendar. It marks the beginning of the forty days and nights before Easter when Jesus fasted in the desert. Many Christians remember Jesus' sacrifice of dying for their sins by observing a restricted diet for Lent, giving up rich, fatty foods and going without luxuries.
Pancakes are eaten on Shrove Tuesday to use up the eggs, butter and milk from the store cupboard as these were considered luxurious foods that were forbidden during the period of Lent.

Ok, now you know why everyone is eating pancakes today. Next you'll need a fool proof pancake batter, I know these thicker pancakes as drop scones and in the supermarkets you'll see them called Scotch pancakes. Trevor says they are just normal pancakes and this is his perfect recipe.

If you are looking to cook thin crepes I recommend Delia Smith's recipe.

Trevor's Pancakes Makes 6 small pancakes
100g self raising flour
100g milk
1 egg

Mix all the ingredients together and drop a spoonful of mixture into a greased frying pan.
If you space the pancakes out you should be able to fry 3-4 at a time.
Flip them over when the batter is full of bubbles and fry them for a minute on the other side.

While not strictly essential there are some glorious pieces of kitchen equipment steeped in as much history as this special day that I think make them taste just that little bit better.
